Influence of Interface Thermal Resistance on Relaxation Dynamics of Metal-Dielectric Nanocomposite Materials under Ultrafast Pulse Laser Excitation

Nanocomposite materials, including noble metal nanoparticles embedded in a dielectric host medium, are interesting because of their optical properties linked to surface plasmon resonance phenomena. For studding of nonlinear optical properties and/or energy transfer process, these materials may be excited by ultrashort pulse laser with a temporal width varying from some femtoseconds to some hund...

Ultrafast 25-fs relaxation in highly excited states of methyl azide mediated by strong nonadiabatic coupling.

Highly excited electronic states are challenging to explore experimentally and theoretically-due to the large density of states and the fact that small structural changes lead to large changes in electronic character with associated strong nonadiabatic dynamics. They can play a key role in astrophysical and ionospheric chemistry, as well as the detonation chemistry of high-energy density materi...

Ultrafast excited-state dynamics of DNA fluorescent intercalators: new insight into the fluorescence enhancement mechanism.

The excited-state dynamics of the DNA bisintercalator YOYO-1 and of two derivatives has been investigated using ultrafast fluorescence up-conversion and time-correlated single photon counting. The free dyes in water exist in two forms: nonaggregated dyes and intramolecular H-type aggregates, the latter form being only very weakly fluorescent because of excitonic interaction. The excited-state d...

Ultrafast electron transport in layered semiconductors studied with femtosecond-laser photoemission

Femtosecond-laser photoemission was used to investigate the electron dynamics in the layered semiconductors MoSe2 and WSe2. Photoexcitation with 200-fs pulses of 2.03 eV light creates an electron gas with significant excess energy. Our measurements reveal a strong transient enhancement in the diffusive transport of the most energetic electrons relative to the conduction-band minimum. Additional...

JMR EARLY CAREER SCHOLARS IN MATERIALS SCIENCE ANNUAL ISSUE Multimodal visualization of the optomechanical response of silicon cantilevers with ultrafast electron microscopy

The manner in which structure at the mesoscale affects emergent collective dynamics has become the focus of much attention owing, in part, to new insights into how morphology on these spatial scales can be exploited for enhancement and optimization of macroscopic properties. Key to advancements in this area is development of multimodal characterization tools, wherein access to a large parameter...
